The Congressional Budget Office is a small nonpartisan agency that provides economic and budgetary analysis to the U.S. Congress to aid in policy decisions. The Management, Business, and Information Services Division seeks a Managing Editor and an Operations Editor.
The Managing Editor is experienced editor to manage its editing and publishing functions—helping to ensure that CBO’s reports are clear and accessible to a broad audience, including Members of Congress, Congressional staff, researchers, and other members of the public.
Responsibilities include supervising a group charged with editing, graphic design, and report production; planning that work and setting processes; and serving as the primary editor of documents about half of the time, on average. The Managing Editor will be assisted in managing day-to-day operations by the Operations Editor, who is responsible for scheduling and coordinating work, and will report to CBO’s Editor in Chief, who is responsible for the overall editorial quality of CBO’s publications. Salary begins at $115,000.
The Operations Editor is a role that combines both editing the agency’s work products and coordinating the day-to-day processes of editing and publishing those products. The editing involves making analytical and technical reports clear and accessible to a broad audience––including Members of Congress, Congressional staff, researchers, and other members of the public. The task routinely involves substantive editing but also includes reviewing and reorganizing drafts, providing writing assistance, and rewriting portions of drafts. Coordination responsibilities include assisting the Managing Editor by tracking drafts, formulating schedules, proposing work assignments, and compiling guidelines and instructions for authors and editors as needed to advance major projects. Salary begins at $65,000.
Those interested can view information about both positions and apply at http://www.cbo.gov/careers. CBO offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits.
