The United States Institute of Peace is an independent quasi-federal institution established and funded by the U.S. Congress to:

USIP seeks a talented and versatile Senior Writer/Editor to join its dynamic, full-service communications team at the Institute’s headquarters in Washington D.C. Working closely with the incumbent Senior Editor/Writer, the selected candidate will produce web-based, multimedia and print materials designed to present the Institute’s unique work to a broad audience on multiple platforms. He/she will serve as a writer and editorial resource, providing expertise including high-quality writing, editing, editorial guidance to staff, proofreading and fact-checking to produce compelling and sometimes customized material for constituencies that may include lawmakers, officials and their staffs, the expert community, practitioners who work in the field and the news media. The Senior Writer/Editor reports to the Director of Communications.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Development and Planning:
Report, research, solicit, write and/or edit the full line of USIP’s online editorial material, including but not limited to: news features on USIP activities, including field operations and the work of grantees; event coverage; blog posts; Q&A’s; editorial audio and video products; public event invitations; tailored factsheets; and publication summaries for the website. Help prepare op-eds for external media.
Develop working relationships with USIP’s program teams and experts.
Work with the Director of Communications and others on the team to write and edit Institute documents such as brochures, fact sheets and other essential outreach materials.
Collaborate with the Communications staff to produce high quality audio and video material including scripts, interview questions and event / printed publications summaries.
Coordinate with the Senior Editor/Writer to maintain a news and events calendar, determine editorial priorities and organize work flow, and work with the team on upcoming news opportunities and multimedia editorial packages on the Institute’s web site to grow the web audience.
Perform other duties as assigned.
A bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, political science or a relevant field.
At least seven years of professional editorial and writing experience in a journalistic and/or magazine publishing environment, with proven news judgment and ability to write on deadline as well as longer form, preferably in the area of foreign affairs, national security or a related field. Public relations agency experience a plus.
Strong knowledge of current international affairs and, preferably, of the State Department and the Defense Department. A minimum of one year of experience writing for online platforms, preferably including familiarity with blogging, twitter and other social media.
Excellent written and oral communications skills.
Full command of the English language and scrupulous attention to the details of quality information and good writing.
Mastery of Associated Press style.
Strong inter-personal communications skills and proven ability to work collaboratively within a team and across an organization.
Demonstrated creativity and innovation in communications.
Ability to organize, set priorities, meet deadlines and manage multiple projects at once, with minimal supervision.

Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
